Randall Cunningham's Son Dies in Tragic Hot Tub Accident

Tragic news broke out this morning that the 2-year-old son of former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham died in a hot tub accident at Cunningham's house, according to the " Las Vegas Review-Journal."

The accident occurred at Cunningham's Las Vegas area home.

The police report indicated that a woman was overseeing several children at Cunningham's home when the drowning happened around 4:30 p.m. local time.

The report went on to say that the woman pulled Cunningham's son from the hot tub and performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

Cunningham's son was taken to a local hospital where he died.

Police continue to investigate the incident, but as of now, they report that it was simply an accident.

Cunningham, who played his college ball at UNLV, is a pastor in the area.

Wimbledon 2010: Roger Federer Must Defy the French Connection...

Which professional tennis troupe is doing their best work on the green lawns of Wimbledon in 2010—the French!

This begs the question—why do these Frenchmen wait to shine on grass?  Shouldn’t they be honing their skills for the red clay in order to secure their own championship at Stade Roland Garros?

One would think so but no player from France has won the French Open since Yannick Noah in 1983, and no French woman has since Mary Pierce in 2000.

Of course, no Frenchman has won at Wimbledon either because Roger Federer blocked the way for most of the preceding decade just as Pete Sampras did in the 1990s.  The French, however, seem to do better in London than at their native tournament in Paris for some unknown reason.

After slogging their way through the clay season as if swimming in mud, the French finally came alive once they reached the green grass of England, although some decided upon a layover in Germany first.

Look at what has happened so far at the All-England Club’s prestigious tennis tournament now that they've arrived.  Fifteen Spanish men entered the main draw at Wimbledon and only four remain heading into round three, mainly because the Spaniards wore themselves out on the red clay.  They were too pooped to serve and volley—no legs to hold their own on the grass courts.

Fourteen players from the United States took to the courts in round one.  When the grass parted at the end of the first round, half of them were gone and by the end of round two potentially only three Americans remain because John Isner of the United States had to go the distance, 70-68 over Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in the fifth set to secure a spot in round two.  Isner’s second round match is yet to be played.  Overall, the Americans have not fared well on the green lawns.

The only Russian left out of seven who began the quest is Mikhail Youzhny who waits to play Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in round two in order to secure a spot in the next round.

On the other hand, 12 Frenchman made it into the main draw.  In the first round, two Frenchmen faced each other, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Marc Gicquel with Mathieu winning in four sets.  The other match worth noting was the Isner-Mahut match.  It took every ounce of effort American Isner could muster to oust the wily Frenchman. Finally Philipp Petzschner of Germany went the distance, taking five sets to defeat Stephane Robert of France.

So now there were nine Frenchman who lived to fight again.  In round two Michael Llodra took the opening set against Andy Roddick, but fell in four.  David Ferrer of Spain also sent a Frenchman packing, Florent Serra in four sets.  Mathieu’s second round match against the Russian Youzhny will not get underway until Friday.

More Frenchman remain than any other player contingent.  Potentially seven or 58 percent of the French head into round three and one of them will face the No. 1 seed Roger Federer as the sun hovers over Centre Court tomorrow afternoon.

Arnaud Clement held a 3-1 winning record over Roger Federer in 2001.  Since that time, however, Federer has defeated the Frenchman the last six times they have met.  Plus, Federer has never lost to the Frenchman on grass.  In fact, Federer has lost to very few players on grass throughout his career but especially after 2003.

He lost to Rafael Nadal during the Wimbledon finals in 2008—his only loss on the grounds at Wimbledon since 2003.  This year at Halle Federer lost to Lleyton Hewitt—representing his second grass court loss since 2003 and his first lost ever at the Gerry Weber Open in Germany.

Undoubtedly, the Federer versus Clement past playing records can be thrown out the window. Federer as well as most of the top seeds have been under siege from much lower-ranked competitors so far in the tournament—except for Andy Murray who has special dispensation from the Queen.

Clement has found success in doubles, possessing tremendous foot speed and deft, quick hands.  Teamed with countryman Llodra, Clement defeated the Bryan Brothers for the Wimbledon Championship in 2007.  The French duo also made it to the finals of the Australian Open in 2008 but fell to the Israeli team of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram.

Clement at age 32 is ranked No. 86 in the world and Federer knows his game well since the two have played each other 10 times.  Clement has been ranked as high as 10 in the world in singles in 2001 and as high as eight in the world in doubles in 2008.  Currently he is playing doubles at Wimbledon with Mahut.

If he has been paying attention, Clement will probably note that so far Federer has faced some difficulty in defeating players whose rankings may have cast doubt on their abilities. However with nothing to lose, Federer’s previous opponents have played above expectations, especially with exceptional serving and aggressive play.

Although the No. 1 seed has played well enough, his wins have not been easy or straightforward. Now opponents on the other side of the net facing the Swiss Maestro no longer turn to jelly because the fear factor seems to have evaporated.

Besides, Clement can take comfort in the fact that being French gives him a slight statistical advantage.  Federer’s only hope is that the French invincibility cloak will lose its magical powers once players enter the third round.

Perhaps then the tennis Gods will restore order, allowing the No. 1 seed to advance into the next round and hopefully into week two of the prestigious Wimbledon Championships, where he surely belongs.

2010 NBA Draft Grades: Grading the Draft Night Suits

The NBA Draft has historically been one of the most entertaining events in sports, not because of David Stern and his jabs at the crowd and the commentators, but because of the suits.

While last year's suits weren't anything to write home about (aside from James Harden and his debate-inducing bow-tie) there have been some classics in years past.

So how did this year's suits do? There were a few great suits and at least one memorably bad one. Click ahead to see the grades for this year and let me know what you thought of the grades.

Breaking down the ACC's NBA First Round Draftees

(note: this blog post can also be found at www.accmania.wordpress.com)

There were five ACC players selected in the first round of this year’s NBA Draft, and despite the conference’s lack of star power this past year, there is hope for a decent crop of first round picks in 2010.

I’ve recapped the ACC’s first rounders and given my thoughts on how they’ll fit in with their pro teams. Of course, knowing how the NBA Draft shuffles players around like NASDAQ does stocks, all these guys will be with completely different franchises tomorrow.

The Eight Most Intriguing Longshots of the 2011 Recruiting Class

Like the game itself, college football recruiting is full of longshots, commitments (or decommitments) that are practically unthinkable.

We haven't seen too many on the 2011 recruiting trail so far, but I'm not ready to say we won't.

A longshot, by nature, is a difficult thing to define. I chose eight scenarios that would appear surprising, but, based on rumors and buzz, are somewhat within the realm of possibility. Even Dostoevsky wouldn't have been able to imagine Braxton Miller committing to Tennessee Tech.

So where are the biggest discrepancies between a player's talent and the prestige of a school that has offered? Does that school have a chance to pull the upset? And if so, how?

Take a look at eight of the most intriguing longshots I see taking shape for the class of 2011. When you really look, they don't seem like longshots so much anymore.

Sources: Former UCLA Basketball Coach John Wooden Resting Comfortably

According to sources, former UCLA Basketball coach John Wooden is resting comfortably at UCLA Medical Center as of Friday morning although he is suffering from dehydration.

Now I am not a doctor, but the dehydration could be a result of Wooden not eating over the past two days.

There is no word on his official condition but if dehydration is all he is recovering from, he is definitely in the process of making a miracle recovery.

The "Wizard of Westwood" seems to be a wizard in recovery as well.

Lou Gehrig Was Even Greater When It Meant More

Lou Gehrig played 14 complete seasons, during which the Yankees won seven pennants and six World Championships, not including world titles in 1923 and 1939, when Gehrig played briefly.

Lou is among a group of players who did better in the World Series than they did during the regular season.

He batted .361, hit 10 home runs, drove home a New York Yankee 35 times, had a gaudy .731 slugging average, and reached base 47.7 percent of the time.

Lou's Incredible World Series Performance

In 1926, the Yankees lost the Series to the St. Louis Cardinals, which was the only time Gehrig played on a team that didn't win the World Championship.

The following year, Gehrig played on the 1927 Yankees.

The Yankees swept an outstanding Pittsburgh Pirates team in 1927, as Gehrig slugged .769, thanks to a pair of doubles and a pair of triples.

In 1928, Gehrig dominated the World Series, as the Yankees swept St. Louis. They beat Jesse Haines and Grover Cleveland Alexander, the pitchers that had each defeated them twice in 1926.

Lou batted .545 with four home runs in the four game Series. He had a .706 on base percentage to go along with an incredible 1.727 slugging percentage.

Gehrig Hit "Only" .529

Connie Mack's great Athletics won the pennants from 1929-1931, but the Yankees won in 1932 and swept the Chicago Cubs.

The Yankees now had swept the last three World Series in which they had appeared, winning 12 consecutive games.

Gehrig hit .529 with three home runs, a .600 on base percentage, and a 1.118 slugging percentage. Lou had cooled off a little since his 1928 World Series performance.

Still Good But Not As Great

The Washington Senators won the pennant in 1933, and then the Detroit Tigers won pennants in 1934 and 1935, but in 1936, the Yankees started a streak of four consecutive pennants and World Championships.

The rival New York Giants, behind the rapidly becoming underrated Carl Hubbell, won the first game, but the Yankees won four of the next five games.

Gehrig hit .292 with two home runs, a .393 on base average, and a .583 slugging average.

The following season the Yankees again beat the Giants, with Gehrig (.294, .455, .647) having another good Series. In 1938, Lou played in his final World Series (.286, .375, .286) as the Yankees swept the Cubs again, but it wasn't the real Lou Gehrig. He was already suffering from the disease that would take his life.

Better Than Mickey, Joe, Jeter, and Alex

There have been many controversies surrounding the Yankees, but there can be no denying that Babe Ruth was the greatest Yankee ever, followed closely by Lou Gehrig.

Imagine what Lou would have accomplished and contributed to society if he had lived a full life. Would anyone agree with Charles Barkley when he said athletes aren't role models?

There's Really Only One Team To Root For on Memorial Day

This Memorial Day weekend there will be 45 Major League Baseball games played. There was one Stanley Cup hockey game and an NBA playoff game with final scores in which one team beat the other.

In the big picture, none of it truly matters.

We banter daily around the water coolers about the "battles" that we won.

Battles aren't fought on the hardwood or at the rink. On the diamond or on the gridiron. Battles are fought on the battlefield only.

Blood isn't shed by guys in shoulder pads, cleats, or jock straps. Real blood is shed by a team with no pads at all.

The word battle should only be reserved for those skirmishes in which our men and women fight far from home, defending honor and displaying courage. The term 'battle' should not be abused when we speak of CC Sabathia buzzing one by the head of Youk and the ensuing square dance that takes place between overzealous boys.

A battle is a revered term we should sanctify when we speak of our troops upholding life and liberty as we know it.

We speak of "our team" as if we suited up ourselves and faced the opposing pitcher on the mound. "Our team" suits up every day to fight an enemy that it doesn't even know. To put their lives on the line so that we can sit back and watch KG take on Kobe.

"Our team" only wishes that it could find the time to play ball in the backyard with a child they have yet to meet. They pray that they could sit around the dinner table and break bread with their mother and father. With their sisters and their brothers. To enjoy the family barbecue we are about to enjoy instead of sharing chow in a mess tent with their adopted brothers and sisters.

While we lie in bed watching the Celts defeat the Lakers, "our team" wishes that they could simply be falling asleep next to their wives or husbands or their fiances. While we love our Yankees or our Sox, "our team" loves their country so much that they are willing to have shrapnel buzzing by their heads at a speed that would make a Nolan Ryan offering look like a Wakefield knuckler.

And "our team" doesn't wear Red Sox or pinstripes. They don't have a closet full of Cubbies t-shirts like you or me. They have a wardrobe that is without diversity. Clothes that they put on each and every day that show their true colors. Red and white and blue.

So when you flip on the tube today and watch your baseball heroes wearing their patriotic red white and blue caps, think of the true heroes.

Not Brady, Moss, and Welker, but Darren Dodge, USMC (my son-in-law), Ryan Moore, USMC, Elizabeth Drake, Air National Guard, Cpl. Lee Haywood, USMC, Robert Corran USMC-RIP, Kevin Messmer, 10th Mountain Cavalry, and Captain Jennifer Harris, USMC-RIP.

They are the heroes that truly went to battle today, yesterday, and the day before.

And they are truly the only team we should be rooting for. These men and women are the true patriots that should fill our hearts today and every day.
